Most of our spending is small A couple of cups of coffee or a few tacos. Most places, unless you’re traveling at the very high end do NOT accept credit cards at all. It also makes sense to us not to use a credit card for a number of reasons. Whipping out a credit card to pay for a US$1.50 bill for two coffees just doesn’t feel right. Most of our purchases (food, bus tickets, occasionally water, etc) are small ticket items.Įven, when you look at the top places to visit in Guatemala nothing is particularly expensive. That’s usually because most of the places we eat at, the buses and transport options we catch operate in a cash society. I always travel with two ATM/cash card and two credit cards and they are in four different places at all times.Get a WISE Card here Use Cash in Guatemala First they used it in Antigua, then at the Sheraton in the city, and finally at the airport. The usage trail led straight to the airport. I do believe the bank folks narrowed it down to the one across from the park (but there is more than one in that block and I can't describe which one this was), because in the days thereafter I saw it shut down and crawling with techies and people in suits. That I was only able to narrow down to one of two machines, both on 5a Avenida, one directly across from the park and one between 5a and 6a Calles down by Mono Loco. I did have my card cloned at a machine right after I moved here in 2018. 4a Calle, south side of the street, just east of 5a Avenida. That one is very close to the central park. No armed guard but I have not been robbed or cheated in four years. I normally use a machine that gives 2500, though. You can also get dollars but I don't know that limit (but you won't need dollars). In Antigua, there is a bank on the southwest corner of 6a Avenida and 5a Calle that has reliable ATMs/cash machines/cajeros and an armed security guard. The machines in the airport work 95% of the time.
